Employers of labour again told to embrace contributory pension scheme

Employers of labour in public and private sectors yet to be part of the contributory pension have again been asked to key into the scheme to save Nigerian workers from the stress involved in accessing their pension benefits at retirement. The Executive Secretary of Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC, Prof. Godswill Obioma made the call at a forum in Lagos organised by the council to appreciate its pensioners.

He said that with the new pension scheme, there was no need for pensioners to go through hardship in accessing their benefits at the end of their service.

The NERDC boss regretted that it was unfortunate that some employers especially in the private sector were yet to key into the pension scheme thereby making the retirement days of their workers to  be bleak.

He observed that media reports have often revealed that, some pensioners in organisations where the old pension scheme is still in operation, cry out to either government or their employers to attend to their plight of non-payment of their pension.

Prof. Obioma stressed that employers not giving workers the assurance of secured pension benefits would not encourage them to put in their best in serving their organisations.

The NERDC pensioners who commended Prof. Obioma for pensions paid when due seized the opportunity of the forum to honour him with an award of excellence.

The pensioners also appreciated NERDC management for always deeming it fit every Christmas season to shower gifts on them.

One of the pensioners, Mr. Oyebisi Fadehan said “NERDC management has been so nice to us. Most times we receive our monthly pensions before the end of every month”.

He however, condemned the treatment some organisations mete out to their pensioners, thereby making some of them to lose their lives in the process of accessing their pension benefits.
